You already know how technology can increase your productivity. It can help you produce better and more work in less time. But can you use technology to connect with peoplei-iclients, seminar participants, friends, colleagues, editors?

This is one of the most rewarding parts of using technology for me. We can communicate instantly with people around the world. Following are some examples that may jog an idea for how you could use technology more effectively to connect with others:

o When I hear a friend has a family loss or illness, I often e-mail or fax my condolences. While my mailed card takes days to arrive, she immediately knows she's in my thoughts and prayers. It might be an imposition to her if I called, as she may not want to talk to anyone.

o Before a presentation, I e-mail my audiences a survey about their challenges. They can respond at their leisure. They feel they know me before they enter the room, since I've given them some background on me.

o After a presentation, I e-mail reinforcement ideas to audience members. I also invite them to ask me questions.

o We e-mail clients information that would be useful to themi-proposals, program descriptions, my bioi-ias well as we work out other program details. I've noticed I get a quicker response than from voice mail. Rather than rekeying, they can simply cut and paste the information into their meeting announcements and program guide.

o We query magazine editors via e-mail for publishing my articles. When they accept, we e-mail them my manuscript so they don't have to re-key the piece.

o Regularly, I exchange e-mail with a dear friend in England, whom I haven't seen in years. It keeps us close as we catch each other up on our lives.

o Often I join a weekly online chat with other speakers. We share what we're working on, and can often help each other with new ideas for projects and solutions to challenges.
